Obesity and COVID-19: What are the risk factors?

Doctor holding up risk factor signCOVID-19 took a toll on people who had certain underlying conditions.  And with these underlying conditions, many people died as a result of COVID-19.

One of the underlying conditions, that is well acknowledged and documented by medical professionals and the CDC, is being overweight or obese (Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30). This risk factor can more than triple your risk to be severely impacted or die due to the virus.

While the reason for this is still something we are learning about, many feel that weight is a factor due to how body fat is distributed to the organs, along with the other health issues, such as high-blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels and the tendency of blood clotting that is often seen in patients who are overweight or obese.

Many experts feel that abdominal fat tends to push the diaphragm up and decrease the lung capacity. Studies also showed that often being overweight or obese lessens your immune system, and leaves you more vulnerable to the coronavirus.

And while age is a major determining factor for getting the vaccine first and foremost in many states, behind the front line and medical professionals, being overweight and obese is one of the health factors that may allow you to get vaccinated sooner if you are interested in getting the vaccine.

Please reach out to your physician to discuss how your weight may put you at greater risk for severe COVID-19 effects. If you don’t have a healthcare provider, reach out to your local health department.
